Looking Back: The First Ki Aikido Class in New Zealand

We held the first Ki Aikido class taught in New Zealand — the official opening of Dokkodo, our dojo in Grey Lynn, Auckland.

A small group of first-time students joined Filimon Sensei for an introduction to the fundamentals: Coordination of Mind and Body, basic Aikido movement, and a short Ki Breathing practice to close the session.

Those introduction classes are a great opportunity for beginners to join the club. Not because they can't join any other class, but because it's a chance to explore with your peers what Ki Aikido has to offer.

Since that first class, we've continued to run regular weekly sessions and open classes for newcomers. If you missed the opening, there's always another chance to start. We will also organise dedicated breathing and meditation classes, in which you can learn about those techniques and how to practice them at home.

Our aim is to establish a dojo in any city or community across New Zealand. If you're part of a community and would like to study this art, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
